Engineering entrance exams are tests that students take to gain admission to undergraduate engineering programs at various universities and colleges. These exams assess a student's knowledge and aptitude in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Depending on the country or region, the exams may vary in terms of structure, syllabus, and the colleges they are associated with.
Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET)
Conducted by: Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA)
Purpose:
It is the primary exam for admission to engineering colleges in Karnataka, including both government and private institutions.
Eligibility:
Candidates must have completed 12th grade (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects.
Exam Pattern:
- The exam consists of 4 papers: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology (for medical courses).
- Each paper is of 60 marks, with 60 questions in multiple-choice format.
- Total duration: 80 minutes for each subject.
Mode:
Offline (Pen and Paper-based).
Admission Process:
Based on KCET scores and the student's performance in Class 12.
COMEDK UGET (Under Graduate Entrance Test)
Conducted by: Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK)
Purpose:
For admission to engineering courses in private unaided institutions across Karnataka.
Eligibility:
Candidates must have passed 12th grade with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.
Exam Pattern:
Multiple-choice questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
180 questions in total (60 from each subject).
Duration:
3 hours
Mode:
Online (Computer-based test)
Admission Process:
Based on COMEDK UGET score and counselling
Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK)
Purpose:
As mentioned earlier, COMEDK conducts a common entrance test for admissions to various private engineering colleges.
Important for:
Those aiming to get into private institutions across Karnataka, as opposed to government-funded or state-managed colleges.
Karnataka Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET)
Conducted by: KEA
Purpose:
This test is for admission to post-graduate engineering programs (M.Tech) in Karnataka. It is important for students aiming for a Master’s degree.
Eligibility:
A valid undergraduate degree (B.Tech/B.E.) in relevant fields.
Exam Pattern:
The exam consists of multiple-choice questions and is conducted for different specializations.
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination)
Conducted by: National Testing Agency (NTA)
Purpose:
While JEE is a national exam, many Karnataka institutions accept JEE Main scores for admission into undergraduate engineering programs.
Eligibility
Students should have completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Exam Pattern:
The exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 (for B.Tech/B.E.) and Paper 2 (for B.Arch).
Multiple-choice questions based on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Mode:
Online (Computer-based test).
Admission Process:
Based on JEE Main scores, followed by JEE Advanced for top colleges.
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)
Conducted by: IITs and IISc
Purpose:
GATE is a national-level exam primarily for admission to post-graduate programs (M.Tech) in various engineering colleges, including IITs and NITs. Some private institutions in Karnataka also accept GATE scores.
Eligibility:
A valid undergraduate degree in engineering or equivalent.
Mode:
Online.
Admission Process:
Based on GATE scores for postgraduate engineering courses.
